Is Your Mind Causing You to Gain Weight?

Losing weight is simple, right? Eat less, exercise more. Calories in, calories out. We all know the cliches. However, why that is so difficult to actually do may be embedded deep within your mind.

A growing body of research is finding intriguing connections between personality traits and habits that can lead to obesity. The link between emotions, food and weight control begins at an early age. "What's important is to identify what's going on in our heads and what we're using food for." says San Francisco weight loss coach Renee Stephens.

Untangling emotions about food may seem daunting, but the truth is whenever we are overeating, or snacking on unhealthy foods - I mean really, who among us doesn't know that broccoli is better for us than french fries - we are likely activating old emotions that are driving the desire to engage in those unhealthy behaviors.

One of the simplest techniques I teach my clients is to take a deep breath in, let it out with a sigh and pause for a moment - become conscious of what you are feeling.

When we attempt to fill ourselves up with food, we are often avoiding or numbing out old feelings, that we don't wish to feel.

Notice your feelings: are you stressed or nervous or feeling insecure when you eat? Are you bored or low on energy? Whatever it is that you are truly feeling, are you attempting to fill that feeling with food rather than experience the feeling deeply?

Obviously negative feelings are uncomfortable, but as we allow ourselves to feel the true feelings they may naturally diminish. Or if we give ourselves something positive in that moment that we wish or need, in ways that have nothing to do with food, we find those old emotional connections with food dissolve away. Could you call a friend, go for a walk, relax with a hypnosis CD, or read a book? Would those activities give you more of what you truly need?

Your feelings have value and are telling you something that it is time to pay attention to. Don't fill yourself up with unhealthy foods or too much food. Instead, give yourself what you truly need. The process begins by simply paying attention to yourself. Sometimes we find that everything changes.
